Edmund Lyon, born in 1790, was a son of Reverend James Lyon, rector of Prestwich. He was Honorary Physician at Manchester Royal Infirmary 1817-1841 and consulting Physician from 1841 until his death in 1862. He was also a heriditary governor at the Manchester Royal Institution.

Dr Lyons bequeathed his personal papers to Dr. Samuel Crompton , who donated them to the library in November 1881
