Custodial history:
A church existed at Flixton in the 12th century when it was granted to Burscough Priory. From the 13th to the 19th centuries it belonged to a prebendary of Lichfield Cathedral. The tithes of the parish were transferred from Lichfield in 1863 and the benefice declared a rectory in 1866 (London Gazette 3 April). The eighteenth century saw the rebuilding of the church, with further restoration and extension in the nineteenth century. The parish originally included the townships of Flixton and Urmston, but in 1868 Urmston was assigned to the new church of St Clement's, by Order in Council, 28 March, (London Gazette, 31 March 1868). Some of the parish was transferred to St Mary's, Davyhulme in 1885, by Order in Council, 27 January, (London Gazette, 30 January), and some to St Mary's, Cadishead, by Order in Council, 8 April 1925, (London Gazette, 14 April). The boundaries with St John the Baptist, Irlam, were altered by Order in Council, 20 December 1967, (London Gazette, 21 December).
