Custodial history:
After the First World War increasing population in the parish of St Philip's, Gorton, led to a desire to build another church. Limited funds were available locally, but use was made of a bequest by Mrs A F Clarke to the Community of the Resurrection at Midfield, Yorkshire, of money to build a church dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy and St Thomas of Canterbury in a poor part of the country. Services were at first held in a hut which was dedicated on 11 August 1924. The foundation stone of the church was laid on 1 May 1926 and it was consecrated on 5 November 1927. A District was assigned by Order in Council, 24 July 1925 (London Gazette, 28 July 1925,) from the parishes of St. Philip, Gorton, St Cyprian, Kirkmanshulme, St Agnes, Birch and St Peter, Levenshulme.
