Custodial history:
Consecrated 6 July 1847. In all probability the last church to be consectrated in Lancashire before the Manchester Diocese was formed is St James': East Crompton, a place between Oldham and Rochdale. The original building of St James was the Wesleyan Burn Chapel which became a mission room and ultimately utilised as the Parish Church when the parish was formed in 1844. In 1846 a new church was built at the cost of £3,115 on a different site, from monies which were able to be collected in that short time of two years but mainly with the aid of a Commissioner's grant from their 'Waterloo Million'. It was consectrated minus the tower and spire which were added in 1854.
