Mr Edward Williams was born in Hulme in 1899. His father worked on the railways, his mother was from North Wales. Mr Williams maternal grandfather could not speak English, only Welsh. Mr Williams worked in a solicitor's office until 1917 when he was enlisted into the Kings Own Royal Lancasters. He saw service in Arras but was eventually posted to Lancaster where he met his wife. Rose Dobson (later Williams) was born in Blackpool in 1896. Her mother died in childbirth, as did her grandmother. She was brought up in Forton, Lancaster, on a farm, by her aunt. Mr Williams met his wife whilst she was a cook/general in the adjutants home in Lancaster, Mr Williams had to make deliveries and a friendship soon blossomed. They married in 1923. The couple lived with Mr Williams parents in Neale: Road, Chorlton for approx. 5 years. Their only son, Edward, was born there in 1925. Mrs Williams, who had moved to Manchester at the time of her marriage, had worked as a cleaner until the birth of her son, Mr Williams worked at the offices of J.M. Smith and Co., Wine and Spirit Merchants in Cross Street until 1971, when they went into liquidation. He was a self taught bookkeeper. The family moved to 29 Belwood Road in 1937. Mr Williams lives at that address with his son, Mrs Williams died in 1976. Mr Williams became interested in religion due, he advocates, to his wife who, though of mixed Catholic Methodist background, attended Methodist services and took her husband along. He became a Methodist lay preacher and was active in the Church until quite recently. Mr Williams was also a keen amateur photographer, most of the photos were taken on a Box Brownie type camera. In the past he has submitted his photographs to various publications and has won various prizes for his efforts.
