The licensing registers from 1869-1890 are arranged alphabetically by license holder. The licensing registers from 1890-1960s are arranged first by police division, and then alphabetically by street name. To find out what police division an address is in, check the index to the appropriate electoral register (held by Local Studies) to find out which ward the address falls in.

Names of wards entirely within A Division: St Anne's, St James's, St John's, Exchange.

Names of wards partially within A Division: New Cross, Medlock, Oxford, St Clement's, St George's, St Michael's, Collegiate.

Names of wards entirely within B Division: Cheetham, Harpurhey, Blackley and Moston, Crumpsall.

Names of wards partially within B Division: New Cross, St Michael's, Newton Heath, Miles Platting.

Names of wards entirely within C Division: Bradford, Ardwick, Openshaw, St Mark's.

Names of wards partially in C Division: Oxford, New Cross, St Clement's, St Luke's, Longsight.

Names of wards entirely within D Division: All Saints', Moss Side West, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Rusholme, Didsbury, Withington, Moss Side East.

Names of wards partially within D Division: Medlock Street, Oxford, St George's, St Luke's.

Police Division E represents the city jurisdiction: police premises and some council departments. In the twentieth century this division covered a larger area.
