The church was started in 1882, as a Mission Room in the parish of St. James, Wardleworth. A Mission Church and Sunday School was built in 1893-1894, and Opened for divine worship on 4 February 1894. The foundation stone of the new church was laid on 16 April 1904, and the nave was consecrated on 19 March 1913. A District was assigned to the Good Shepherd by Order in Council, 13 January 1902, (London Gazette. 14 January 1902), from the parishes of St. James, Wardleworth, All Saints, Hamer, and St. Peter, Newbold. By Order in Council, 21 December 1977, (London Gazette, 29 December), the Good Shepherd, St. Chad, Rochdale, St. Aidan, Sudden and St. Peter, Newbold, though remaining distinct parishes, became the Benefice of Rochdale, with a team ministry. The boundaries of the parish of the Good Shepherd with those of St. Mary and St. James, Wardleworth, were altered by Pastoral Order, 27 October 1981, (London Gazette, 14 November 1981). The church of the Good Shepherd was declared redundant in 1997. The final service was held on 26 January 1997.
