Holcombe chapel was an ancient chapelry in the parish of Bury serving the township of Tottington Lower End. The old chapel was demolished in 1851 and a new church consecrated on 8 April 1853. Emmanuel church, Holcombe, was assigned as its district, by Order in Council, 17 November 1863 (London Gazette, 20 November 1863), the township of Tottington Lower End excluding that already assigned (13 December 1843) to St. Anne's, Tottington, and (23 May 1844) to St. Paul's, Ramsbottom. Part of the parish was transferred to St. Mary's, Hawkshaw, by Order in Council, 9 May 1892 (London Gazette, 13 May). The boundaries with All Saints, Elton, were amended by Pastoral Order 8 November 1976 (London Gazette, 25 November), and those with St. Andrew's, Ramsbottom, were amended by Pastoral Order, 29 April 1983 (London Gazette, 12 May).

Records relating to the church , the schools and the charities were deposited in the Library as Diocesan Record Office in November 1980 by Rev. R. M. F. Haigh, with a few additions in August 1984. The constables', surveyors' and overseers' papers relating to Tottington Lower End , most of the papers relating to Rev. Thomas Bridge's charity and other papers were deposited in 1959 by Rev. J. D. Driver.
