The chapel of Denton in the parish of Manchester was built c 1531 and was originally dedicated to St. James. In the 17th century it was known as Denton chapel. It was dedicated to St. Lawrence in the 19th century. The townships of Denton and Haughton were assigned to the chapel by Order in Council, 14 September 1838, London Gazette, 29 March 1839). Parts of these townships were transferred to Christ Church Denton, by Order in Council, 25 February 1846, (London Gazette, 17 March 1846). The District of St. Larwrence, Denton, was assigned by Order in Council, 8 June 1854, London Gazette, 16 June 1854), and the boundaries were altered in 1856 by Order in Council, 24 June, (London Gazette, 1 July 1856). In 1879 part of the parish was given to the new church of St. Mary the Virgin, Haughton, by Order in Council, 26 June, (London Gazette, 4 July 1879).
