The Pansy Project'

2005-2006
Archives
The Pansy Project', which first appeared at queerupnorth during the 2005 Festival, was conceived by artist Paul Harfleet. The project began with him revisiting city streets planting pansies as close as possible to where he had received verbal homophobic abuse. These self seeding pansies acted as a living memorial to this abuse and operated as an antidote to it: some pansies wither whilst others thrive in car park borders and windswept road verges. Each pansy's location is named after the abuse received and then posted on www.thepansyproject.com. In 2006 the project was developed for national touring. The tour started at Manchester City Art Galleries as part of the 2006 Festival where a series of activities culminated in the production of a work made in conjunction with Lesbian and Gay Youth Manchester (LGYM) and Age Concern. 'The Pansy Project' was supported by queerupnorth and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
