Custodial history:
The five albums were the work of the donor's grandfather, Augustus Mitchell. Born in Manchester in 1856, he became an income tax office clerk and a keen amateur photographer. He married Emily Jones from Dolgelly and they had 4 children : Harold, the donor's father, born 1891, Edith, born 1893, Clifford, born 1895 and Sylvia, born 1909. Harold later worked for Manchester Transport Department. Clifford (now deceased) followed his father into the tax office. Edith may have worked briefly as a teacher, but then married and brought up a family. Sylvia became a secretary in the Civil Service. Augustus joined the Manchester Amateur Photographic Society in 1889 and continued as a member until 1920. He died in 1929. From the `Annual Reports of MAPS Augustus was living in Union Street, Greenheys in 1889, moving to 20 Darncombe Street, Moss Side by 1890, 45 Darncombe Street in 1891 and 1893, 40 Darncombe Street in 1894, and back to number 45 thereafter.
The donor traced two further references to his grandfather:
17 Oct. 1891 - A Mitchell incharge of the darkroom on the first Friday of the month.
26 Jan. 1894 - A Mitchell won first prize in Darlington's Handbooks Competition for the three best photographs of Welsh Scenery. These to be inserted in new edition of guidebook.
Three prints exhibited at the annual exhibition in December 1893 - much too dark for lighting of room, but strong daylight would reveal their full beauties.
