The Board was set up in November 1963, by Diocesan Conference, following the report of the Bishop of Manchester's Commission on Moral Welfare Work.
It succeeded earlier bodies concerned with the moral welfare of men, women and children, chiefly St George's Association, and the Manchester Diocesan Association for Preventive and Rescue Work (from 1937 the Manchester Diocesan Council for Moral Welfare Work).
From January 1997 it became the Manchester Diocesan Board for Church and Society.
