Divine service was held at St. James' school from 1861 until the church was completed in 1865. A District was assigned by Order of Council, 12 March 1866 (London Gazette 13 Mar 1866) from the parishes of Bury, Rochdale and Newchurch in Rossendale. The boundaries were altered by Order in Council 2 March 1881 (London Gazette 11 March 1881), when more of the parish of Newchurch was added. St, John's Cloughfold, was assigned part of the District by Order in Council 25 March 1887 (London Gazette 29 March 1887). The parish was divided between Newchurch, St Nicholas and Edgeside St Anne when the Church closed in 1998.
