Bury parish church provided a curate to hold services at Blackford Bridge from 1862. The corner stone of St. Peter's was laid on 23 August 1871 on land donated by Lord Derby and the church consecrated on 29 June 1872. It was assigned a district out of the parishes of Bury and Radcliffe by Order in Council, 5 February 1873, (London Gazette, 11 February) Part of St. Peter's parish was assigned to Holy Trinity, Bury, by Order in Council, 20 December 1957, (London Gazette, 31 December) and some to St. Mary's, Bury, by Order in Council, 24 March 1965 (London Gazette, 26 March). The boundaries were altered again by Order in Council, 6 December 1973 (London Gazette, 20 December) when part of St. George's, Unsworth was transferred to St. Peter's and part of St. Peter's assigned to Radcliffe.
