Plan File Indexes

1800s-1900s
Archives
The City Engineers Plan File is a large collection of microfiche cards of plans of streets, sewers, areas and planning documents. The street Record Cards (GB127.M723/84/1) show which plans exist, for which scales and dates.
Please make an appointment to see the box containing the letter of the alphabet for the street you are interested in and then you can order any relevant microcards for a subsequent visit. Please note that not all plans survive. Alternatively you can use our paid research service to check the street record cards. We will then report back on which plans survive.
There are smaller indexes in individual boxes for Naming and Numbering of Streets (GB127.M723/84/2), Street Adoption Cards (GB127.M723/84/3) and Street Closure Cards (GB127.M723/84/4). These can also be consulted in the Search Room.
Each street has a key number, for example 1657 is Altrincham Road. Each plan has a full number which includes a size marker and individual plan number, eg. E 1657/-/166 is the general plan of naming and numbering of Altrincham Road/Moor Road Estate in Oct 1968 at 1/500 scale at size E..
The old plans index (GB127.M723/84/5) has been transcribed and you can order these microfiche to view in the Search Room.
