Custodial history:
The parish of the Ascension was formed in March l973 from St Philip's, Hulme (which by then consisted of the old parishes of All Saints, Chorlton upon Medlock, Holy Trinity, St John the Baptist, St Mark's, St Stephen's and St Michael's) and St Gabriel' Hulme. It was joined in November 1978 by St Mary's, Hulme. (see M32l/), and in June 1982 by St George's, Hulme (see M383/). ALL SAINTS, OXFORD STREET, CHORLTON UPON MEDLOCK: The foundation stone was laid on 12 Mar. 1819 and the church built at the expense of Dr. Charles Burton, the first incumbent. It was consecrated on 12 Apr. 1820. A printed copy of the consecration deed and engraving of the church is to be found with Archdeacon John Rushton's Visitation Returns, 1846. (MS f 942.72 R121 vol.39) The church was damaged by fire in Feb. 1850 and by enemy action, Christmas 1940. It was pulled down in 1949. In 1959 along with the parishes of Holy Trinity, Hulme and St John the Baptist, Hulme, All Saints was united with the parish of St Philip's, Hulme. HOLY TRINITY, STRETFORD ROAD, HULME: The foundation stone was laid on 2 Dec. 1841 and the church built at the expense of Miss Eleanora Atherton. It was consecrated in 1843. Marriages took place from Dec. 1843 though it was not licensed for them until 1852. Consequently a special Act of Parliament to render valid certain Marriages in the Church of the Holy Trinity in the Township of Hulme and Parish of Manchester was passed in 1853 to legalise those which had previously taken place (see also Archdeacon John Rushton's Visitation Returns, 1846, MSf 942.72 R121 vol.45) The parish was formed by Order in Council, 8 June 1854, (London Gazette, 16 June 1854). In 1959, by Order in Council 11 Dec. (London Gazette, 5 Jan. 1960) along with the parishes of All Saints, Chorlton upon Medlock and St John the Baptist, Hulme, Holy Trinity was united with the parish of St Philip's Hulme, whose incumbent had held the four benefices in plurality since Oct. 1950. The church was demolished in 1953. ST JOHN THE BAPTIST, RENSHAW STREET, HULME: The parish was formed by Order in Council 29 Nov.1859 (London Gazette, 2 Dec. 1859) from All Saints, Chorlton on Medlock, Holy Trinity, Hulme and Christ Church, Moss Side. In 1959 along with All Saints, Chorlton upon Medlock and Holy Trinity, Hulme, the parish of St John the Baptist was united with St Philip's, Hulme, by Order in Council, 21 Dec. (London Gazette, 5 Jan. 1960), these benefices having been held in plurality, by the incumbent of St Philip's since Oct. 1950. ST PHILIP'S, CHESTER STREET, HULME: St Philip's church was erected in 1860 by the Birley family who provided its first rector, Canon Robert Birley. It was consecrated on 29 Sept. 1860. The parish was formed by Order in Council, 20 Nov. 1861 (London Gazette, 22 Nov. 1861), out of the parishes of Holy Trinity, Hulme, and All Saints, Chorlton upon Medlock. In 1959 these two parishes and Holy Trinity, Hulme, were united in the parish of St Philip's, by Order in Council, 21 Dec. (London Gazette, 5 Jan. 1960), having been held in plurality by the incumbent of St Philip's since Oct. 1950. By Order in Council, 10 Oct. 1967, (London Gazette, 13 Oct. 1967), the parish of St Stephen with St Mark and St Michael's, Hulme, joined the parish of St Philip's. In 1970, by Order in Council 29 May (London Gazette, 4 June) St Gabriel's was united with St Philip's and by Order in Council, 29 Mar. 19715 (London Gazette, 15 Apr. 1973) the church and parish of the Ascension replaced St Philip's. The old church was demolished in 1974. St Philip's Schools were founded in 1858 by the Birley family for the children of the employees at their mackintosh factory. The upper rooms were for fee paying pupils and the basement school was free. ST MARK'S, CITY ROAD, HULME: The parish was formed by Order in Council, 27 Aug. 1846, (London Gazette, 22 Sept. 1846) Premises in City Rd. and River Street were used before the foundation stone of a permanent church was laid on 16 June 1
