Custodial history:
This collection of photographs was donated by Brenda Hancock as she sold up her home in Marple to start up a new life in America and India. The D.P.A. had previously copied some few photographs which belonged to the donor and related to her mother, Gwennyth, nee King. (See deposit 2520 in the Archive of Family Photographs.) Gwennyth and her twin sister Lesley were born in Shanghai on 12 March 1905. Their father William S. King, born in Foochow, had been a teabroker, prominent businessman and long-established member of the British community in Shanghai. Some of the photographs in this collection appear to relate to China in the 1920s but no specific details are known. The phortographs were directed into the D.P.A. by Maureen Patch, archivist of the Greater Manchester County Record Office.
