The parish of St. Luke the Physician was formed by Order in Council, 23rd June 1971, (London Gazette, 29th June) by the union of the parishes of St. Matthew's with St. Clement's, Longsight, and St. Stephen's, Chorlton upon Medlock.
In 1978 St. Thomas's, Ardwick, was also added, by Order in Council, 29 September (London Gazette 5 Oct. 1978).
ST. MATTHEW'S HYDE RD., ARDWICK
Services started in St. Matthew's School, Grey St. on 1 January 1865. The foundation stone of the church was laid on 22 September 1866 and it was consecrated on 15 August 1868. Its District was formed by Order in Council, 13 May 1869, (London Gazette, 14 May) from St. Thomas's, Ardwick and St. Stephen's, Chorlton upon Medlock.
Part of the parish was assigned to St. Clement's Longsight, by Order in Council, 21 July 1876, (London Gazette, 25 July 1876).
Part was assigned to St. Benedict's, Ardwick, by Order in Council, 28 June 1880 (London Gazette, 9 July).
It was united with St. Clement's, Longsight, by Order in Council, 8 May 1968, (London Gazette, 14 May), St. Matthew's church becoming the parish church of the new parish of St. Matthew's with St. Clement's, Longsight.
In 1971 the united parish joined St. Stephen's, Chorlton upon Medlock to form the parish of St. Luke the Physician, Longsight.
ST. CLEMENT'S, GREY ST., LONGSIGHT
St. Clement's was consecrated in 1876 and a District assigned to it from the parish of St. Matthew's, Ardwick, by Order in Council, 21 July 1876 (London Gazette, 25 July).
By Order in Council, 8 May 1968, (London Gazette, ik May) St. Clement's was reÄunited with St. Matthew's, Ardwick, as St. Matthew's with St. Clement's, Ardwick. The church was closed in September 1969 and demolished in September 1970.
In 1971 the united parish joined St. Stephen's, Chorlton upon Medlock, to form the parish of St. Luke the Physician, Longsight.
