The firm was established in 1747, in Tean, Staffordshire, by John and Nathaniel Philips, who were later joined by their brother Thomas Philips. The family went on to establish smallware weaving concerns at Radcliffe and Whitefield, near Bury, and set up two smallware firms in Manchester, under the names of John and Nathaniel Philips and Nathaniel and Faulkner Philips, and a hatting business under the name of Thomas and Nathaniel Philips. The main Manchester firm of J and N Philips became a nationwide merchanting and manufacturing enterprise. A London warehouse was opened in 1914. The firm became a private limited company in 1915 and a public limited company in 1919. During the Second World War part of the firm's Manchester premises were requisitioned as a site for the censorship of mail of British prisoners of war. The company closed down in 1970. The company had connections with a number of other firms. They acquired an interest in James Chadwick and Brother, of Eagley Mills, near Bolton, cotton spinners and thread makers, in 1830. In 1921 they purchased the business of Isaac Thorpe and Sons Ltd, of Manchester, textile manufacturers and warehousemen. A large interest in W Smith and Co, Witney Ltd, of Witney, Oxfordshire, blanket manufacturers, was acquired in 1926. The company also had business connections with John Ormand Taylor, of Hamilton, Lanarkshire, nightwear manufacturer.
